Do you purchase flavored oatmeal packets at the store? Do you like the price of them? Do you know what all the ingredients are in them? I used to purchase them too because they were quick to grab and go in the mornings. But once I searched the internet and found out how easy it was to make my own, that’s what I have been doing ever since. I looked through several recipes and tried different ones. This is the one I use time and again. I will make up several packets (bags) on the weekend so I’m ready to go during the work week. They also are handy when my husband and I are on different shifts on the weekends. My favorite mix is triple C (cinnamon, chia seeds, and cranberry) and walnut oatmeal.
Tools
Measuring cups and spoons
Sandwich sized Ziplock bags
Base
½ cup quick oats (or old-fashioned, just takes longer to cook)
½ teaspoon brown sugar
¼ teaspoon salt (or less if you like)
Optional
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon whole chia seeds
2 teaspoons nuts (walnuts, pecans, or almonds are good choices)
¼ cup dries fruit (apples, cranberries, blueberries, etc.)
Place ingredients in a bowl or mug. Add around 1 cup of boiling water (depending on how thin or thick you like it), stir, and let it sit for about 5 minutes to cook.
A special note about chia seeds: please wait the full 5 minutes for the oatmeal to cook. Chia seeds will swell up to 10-12 times their weight in water and that’s a good thing. You want the seeds to swell before you eat them. Eating dry chia seeds can cause choking and blockage in the esophagus.
If you’re making packets ahead, like I do, I set up an assembly line on the weekend. I pull out all the tools and ingredients, place them in a line, and add the measuring cups and spoons in each ingredient.
Then I grab a ziplock bag, roll the zipper part over to open the bag, and add the ingredients.
I will start with the oatmeal first into the bottom of the bag. It will be the largest amount of ingredient in the bag and will set up a good base for the other ingredients.
Then I’ll add in the brown sugar and salt.
Then I’ll add in my optional ingredients.
Roll up the ziplocks to get the air out and zip them. Now they’re ready to go when you are.
Feel free to mix up the ingredients. I have heard some people use maple syrup sugar instead of brown sugar. You can also use your favorite sugar substitute. Just keep in mind, if you’re making the oatmeal to eat right away, you can use liquid sweeteners and real berries. But if you making packets ahead to use later, keep to powdered and dried food forms. You don’t want soggy or moldy packets later.

- Take a Ziplock bag, open it up, and roll the top over the zipper.
- Add the Quick Oats to the bag.
- Add the Brown Sugar to the bag.
- Add the Table Salt to the bag.
- Add in any Optional add ins to the bag.
- Once all the ingredients are in the bag, unroll the top of the bag, roll the bottom of the bag up to remove the air, and zip the bag up.
