Easy Homemade Oatmeal Packets

Here are step by step instructions to make your own oatmeal packets.

Equipment

  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Ziplock bags - sandwich size

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Quick Oats (or old-fashioned, just takes longer to cook)
  • ½ tsp. Brown Sugar (more or less as you like)
  • ¼ tsp. Table Salt (more or less as you like)

Optional add ins

  • ¼ tsp. Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. Whole Chia Seeds
  • 2 tsp. Chopped Nuts (Walnuts, Pecans, or Almonds are good choices)
  • ¼ cup Dried Fruit (Apples, Cranberries, Blueberries, etc.)

Instructions

  • Take a Ziplock bag, open it up, and roll the top over the zipper.
  • Add the Quick Oats to the bag.
  • Add the Brown Sugar to the bag.
  • Add the Table Salt to the bag.
  • Add in any Optional add ins to the bag.
  • Once all the ingredients are in the bag, unroll the top of the bag, roll the bottom of the bag up to remove the air, and zip the bag up.

Notes

Feel free to mix up the ingredients. I have heard some people use maple syrup sugar instead of brown sugar. You can also use your favorite sugar substitute.
Place ingredients in a bowl or mug. Add around 1 cup of boiling water (depending on how thin or thick you like it), stir, and let it sit for about 5 minutes to cook. If you used old fashioned oats, the cook time will need to be longer.
A special note about chia seeds: please wait the full 5 minutes for the oatmeal to cook. Chia seeds will swell up to 10-12 times their weight in water and that’s a good thing. You want the seeds to swell before you eat them. Eating dry chia seeds can cause choking and blockage in the esophagus.
